A heavy Lake Effect snowstorm is expected to hit Western New York

A lake-effect snow warning was issued for western New York on Wednesday, and communities east of Lake Ontario, such as Buffalo, may experience up to 6 feet of snow by Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service warned in a statement that this storm may produce “paralyzing snowfall” during the weekend.

“Colder air will pour across the region tonight, with significant lake snows blossoming east of both lakes; this will be the start of a prolonged lake effect snow event that will likely include paralyzing snowfall for the Buffalo and Watertown areas late this week through the weekend,” the NHC said on its website.

On Wednesday, a constant string of storms over Lake Erie caused a lake-snow effect, with 1-2 inches of snow falling from Chautauqua County’s coastline into southern Erie County. Snowfall over the night might amount to more than a foot.

Temperatures north of Lake Erie are forecast to be substantially colder, with heavier precipitation.

“The ongoing lake effect off Lake Ontario is not as well coordinated over Oswego County. The Lake Ontario band will be better organized as we progress through the evening hours when colder air enters “According to the NHC.

The Buffalo Bills are set to play the Cleveland Browns at home this Sunday.

The storm has already disrupted college football games, including one on Wednesday night in Michigan.
