In order to keep British grocery shelves stocked, Liz Webster of Save British Food, who owns a farm in Wiltshire, urged for a speedy reinstatement of free trade with Europe.
She said on LBC this morning, “I’ve been trying to tell folks this is on the road for some time.
It is a result of Brexit.
“In the end, the choices taken by this government regarding the kind of Brexit and what they choose to do following that Brexit.
“Due to Brexit decisions, the British food industry is in danger of collapsing in on itself.
“They are taking away our food security in Britain so that we can presumably rely on the rest of the globe to feed us.
We are now dependent on those living outside of Europe who live far away from us in order to feed ourselves since they have cut off our trade with Europe.
She said that because energy prices in Britain are greater than those in the rest of Europe, “tomato growers in glass houses in Britain have shut them down.”
Asda and Morrisons have already introduced caps on a range of fruits and vegetables.
Asda has limited shoppers to three items each on eight fresh produce lines – including broccoli, cauliflower, raspberries and lettuces.
Morrisons is putting limits of two per item on packs of tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce and peppers from Wednesday.
Sainsbury’s, Lidl, Waitrose and M&S have not announced any limits.
The former CEO of Sainsbury’s yesterday said supermarkets in the UK have been ‘hurt horribly by Brexit’.
