Donald Trump is just one of the high-profile and contentious figures who may be allowed to return to Twitter following Elon Musk’s takeover of the platform.
Following months of legal wrangling, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla purchased Twitter for $44 billion on Thursday.
In other news, a hoax statement purporting to be from the former president congratulating Musk on his purchase of Twitter has gone viral on social media. According to the message, Trump’s account will be “back up and running on Monday.”
Truth Social CEO Devin Nunes shared the fake statement on his platform with the caption: “LOL! Desperation on the left for @realDonaldTrump to return to Titter. Deepfakes and FakeNews”
Other high-profile names who have had their Twitter accounts permanently banned and may be returning to the platform include InfoWars conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, former White House adviser Steve Bannon, and Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene’s personal account.
Musk has frequently advocated for Twitter to be a “digital town square,” with free speech and content that is not as strictly moderated.
Musk, on the other hand, said in a statement to Twitter’s advertisers on Thursday that the social-media site “clearly cannot become a free-for-all hellscape, where anything can be said with no consequences!”
