Klynn Scales had a terrifying childhood filled with torment and neglect. Her home was a dark place full of drugs and violence. She frequently had to steal food from the local gas station just to keep her younger brothers fed.
When Klynn was 9-years-old she met a police officer who became aware that things weren’t quite right. He would visit her home every day and Klynn was always there to greet hime with a smile and a wave… until she didn’t.
The officer immediately knew something was wrong when she didn’t run out to meet him.
He followed his instinct and opened the front door only to find Klynn sick with no adults in the home. She was dangerously underfed and suffering from malnutrition. He rushed her to the hospital where doctors were able to help her recover.
Shortly thereafter Klynn moved to Kansas and was given the opportunity for a better life.
At the time, Klynn didn’t even know the officer’s name. “Through all the bad situations, I would just picture him saying that he was here for us and that if we ever needed him, he would be right there,” she told WDAF. “He would always protect us, and so those words would come to me during the worst times of my childhood.”
Years later she made an effort to track down the man who saved her, Sgt. Jeff Colvin.
After their incredible reunion (see the second video below), Klynn vowed to become a police officer. Just two years later she became an officer with the Galveston Police Department in Kansas. When she graduated she asked if it would be possible for Sgt. Colvin to pin on her badge. Sgt. Colvin wouldn’t miss it.
“I was very proud of her,” Colvin said in an interview with ABC News. “She really beat all statistical odds to get where she was. Most people would look at her 9-year-old self and basically write her off and say this girl doesn’t have a chance in the world. She’s not going to amount to anything. She obviously proved everybody wrong there.”
